There were plenty of pastels on the catwalk during the spring shows, but the look was sealed when Chanel launched their latest shade of Le Vernis Nail Colour in a minty pistachio green.

Now cosmetic counters are groaning under the weight of cute candy floss shades.

Here is Sue's advice on nail care and her guide to the best candy nail colours.

"With this look, long nails are out - keep yours short and square, with just a soft rounding off at the edges.

When using a file, always file in one direction, never back and forth because this can weaken nails.

To avoid chipping off the varnish, set aside some time to apply it properly.

A base coat is really important to give a smooth finish.

It also helps with removing all the colour when you come to take it off.

We love Rimmel Lycra base coat (£2.99, available nationwide).

Once the base coat is dry, add two layers of colour.

Don't worry about brush marks as these will vanish as the polish dries but leave enough time between coats for the varnish to dry to avoid drag marks.

Once the colour has dried, add one layer of top coat. Try OPI RapiDry TopCoat.

Although it is a little expensive (£12.80, nailsandthings.co.uk).

Not only will it add a great shine, it is also a must to help prevent chips."
