Pastel tones are bang on trend - Trend - Makeup

GIRLIE pastels are big news for spring with delicate lilacs and soft greens among the on-trend shades.

Beauty counters are loaded with fabulous new products for lips, eyes and nails, but you need to choose your shade wisely to avoid looking washed out.

Here is SUE MOXLEY's guide to perfecting the look.

Dark skin

Pinks of any shade always look fantastic on dark skin.

Choose a delicate colour for the eyes such as Mac's Rosy Outlook Shadow (£11, nationwide), which is a beautiful frosted baby pink, then contrast it with something with a deeper tone for the lips, such as Clinique Different Lipstick in Rose Taffy (£14, nationwide).

Add a gorgeous coral shade on your nails to finish the look. Try Mavala's little pots in Gstaad (£3.75, mavala.co.uk).

Pale skin

Steer clear of anything with a rosy tone such as pinks or lilacs. In a pale shade, they can make porcelain complexions look pasty. Instead, go for colours with a strong tone such as greens or blues.

If you have blonde hair, mix and match with a slick of baby blue on your eyes such as Rimmel Colour Rush Mono in Azure (£3.99, nationwide) and a springtime green on your nails such as Marks & Spencer Essential Colours Nail Colour in Mint (£2.50, Marks & Spencer).

Redheads should select green as the main colour, with a pale shade for the eyes. Choose Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Liquid Eyeshadow in Pearly Golden Green (£6.99, nationwide) and a stronger tone for the nails such as Barry M's Nail Colour in Mint Green (£2.95, barrym.com).

Keep lips nude with a sexy gloss with just a delicate hint of colour such as Rimmel's Stay Glossy lip gloss in Captivate Me (£5.99, nationwide).

Olive skin

Don't go for anything too pale if you have an olive complexion as the tone will fade away against your skin.

Brown eyes look wonderful with a lilac shadow such as NYC Colour Wheel Mosaic Powder in Purple Rain (£3.99, nationwide). Choose a rosy shade for your lips, such as Bourjois So Delicate Lip Cream (£7.99, nationwide).

Pick out the colour of your lips in your nails by choosing an ice-cream pink such as Nailgirls Pink 19, which is a pale, sheer pink with shimmer (£10, nailgirls.co.uk).
