They’re not only combining style and sustainability, and “are passionate about making a difference in terms of having a triple bottom-line approach – people, planet and profit. Not just profit!” says Kelly Drennan, founder of Fashion Takes Action (FTA) which launched the awards.

We’re not talking burlap sacks and hippie frocks, says Drennan. Eco clothing is fashion-forward, funky and fabulous.

“In Canada there has been a flurry of activity with respect to designers moving toward sustainability.” The numbers have tripled over the past three years and Drennan is on a mission to see fashion greening grow.

“These are the designers who should be applauded for their pioneering work and for showing the rest of the fashion industry how easy and stylish it is to go green,” says Drennan, adding that 14 designers are vying for the award – filtered from a field of 40.

Passion and dedication are being fashioned into eco friendly clothing by nominees including Thieves, Lav & Kush, Flora & Fauna, Preloved, Laura Chenoweth and Paper People Clothing.

Fabric choice, production, design and special features will be judged and a winner will be announced at the end of April. FTA invited the public to vote online for their favourite eco fashion designer – that ended on Friday.
