In a city that divides and defines itself by public service, it’s easy to overlook the topic of personal style. But the way District denizens put themselves together each day can say as much about them as the issues, parties and political figures they support. And if you listen, they’re saying plenty: On one street corner, a classic prep passes by in seersucker and boat shoes. On another, a well-assembled eccentric glides by in an offbeat straw hat and lace-up oxfords. The consensus: both stylish, both Washington. On a recent Friday, we snapped eight standouts and got their take on where they fit in our city’s broad spectrum of personal style. Even when they think they don’t, they do.

Meredith Friermood, 28

Friermood, a graduate student at GWU, looks cool and crisp in a floral shift from Esprit, which she rounds out with a simple straw bag, bright enamel bangle, slim gray belt and peach patent-leather flats, all of which she found at J. Crew. During her first summer in the District, the Denver native is relying on easy, effortless pieces. "I feel like the lift you get from wearing bright colors and neons is really invigorating," Friermood says. "On most days, I would probably opt for something a little more conservative, and then wear bright colors to bring it out -- like a bright blouse with a black skirt, or a pair of bright shoes."

Why we stopped her: Friermood's aesthetic is clean and classic, thanks to timeless accessories and a spare silhouette, but a lively print and an easy smile complemented her youthful energy.

Where her style fits in Washington: "I don't feel I fit into the very serious, political side of Washington. ... I'm a very visual person and I like to translate that into my clothes," she says. "If I had to wear black every day, I'd be a very unhappy person."

Veronica Ricca, 25

This New Orleans native's love of '60s-inspired pieces is what drew her to this melon-hued shift from Ann Taylor Loft, which she wears with gold Bandido sandals. She goes for accessories with a vintage vibe, such as her broken-in, vachetta leather satchel. "That's probably the only piece I have from Liz Claiborne. I got it because I loved the color," Ricca says. "I get compliments on it every day." Her small bumblebee stud earrings were her grandmother's, and her magnolia-leaf pendant is J. Crew. "It reminded me of the magnolia trees in Louisiana," she says. "And all my Louisiana friends are jealous."

Why we stopped her: Ricca's look is simple and summery. It touches on polished, era-spanning style, but her outfit's true personality is in the details.

Where her style fits in Washington: "I like the things Jackie O. wore or Audrey Hepburn wore -- things that will always look good," she says. "If I stay classic, it's safe. And I like to do safe."
