Joining them to celebrate were supermodels (Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum), funnymen (Sacha Baron Cohen, Paul Rubens, Garry Shandling) and family members, including Rosanna and Alexis Arquette and Harper’s wife, Laura Dern, and her mother, Diane Ladd.

While Arquette, who dreamed up the sublime concept, is known for his goofy get-ups like the green suit he wore to present Kermit the Frog with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, Harper told The Moment that they were taking a more wearable approach, targeting customers “from South Central to St. Tropez” with breezy separates designed in conjunction with Loden Dager’s Paul Marlow and the former Penguin vice president David Bedwell.

Future seasons will see more formal looks like the Propr tux Harper wore to this year’s Emmys, but Arquette said that casual is always key: “They’re clothes you can crumple up and throw in a suitcase — a little bit gangster, but not much.” Harper closed the evening with a short, impassioned set of new songs, performed against a backdrop of glittering city lights. Despite the plentiful bottles of whiskey set out on tables for the tasting, the only poolside casualty was Coco Cox-Arquette’s teddy bear, who emerged soggy but unharmed.
