Giorgio Armani boarded the Orient Express at Milan Fashion Week on Sunday for the showing of his youthful Emporio Armani collection.

His theme for next spring/summer was a delicate juxtaposition of East-meets-West, expressed in diaphanous fabrics, watercolour pastels, exotic blooms – and even more exotic butterflies and insects, embroidered and beaded on sarong-style evening-gowns.

Unusually, for Armani, normally the master of both minimalism and modesty, there was a fair degree of flesh on display. Ribbon-trimmed dance-skirts, in the style of Rajasthan, were slung low around the hips to reveal the belly-button.

Abbreviated, beaded vests and low-cut, sequined jackets, barely covered the cleavage. And I even spotted a pair of chiffon, see-through “evening shorts” worn over navy “big knickers”.
